Freiburg
in Breisgau has exerted a magical attraction since it was founded
in 1120 by the Dukes of Zähringen. It's no surprise - the
Black Forest and Vosges mountains are close by, while Feldberg,
Shauinsland, and Schluchsee are all in the immediate vicinity.
The city owed its prosperity in the Middle Ages to its favorable
position on the trade route between Swabia and Burgundy and
close proximity to silver mines. After surviving numerous wars
from between the

16th and 18th centuries without major damage, the old town was
finally demolished in WWII, with the exception of the Gothic
Cathedral which remains as Freiburg's landmark.
Bubbling with historical charm, Freiburg is a university town
home to Albert-Ludwigs Universität. Its economy is based
not just on tourism, but Freiburg is also one ofthe major wine
growing cities in Germany, a leader in green technology, and
the administrative and organizational center for South Baden.
