NÜRNBERG, GERMANY – PRO IFX GERMANY

After concluding a successful collegiate career at Longwood University, IFX welcomes Zack Mahon. He is a striker from San Antonio, Texas. Mahon received an invitation to preseason from USL club Harrisburg City Islanders. Mahon spent the last season playing with USL PDL side Kitsap Pumas. The Longwood University (Big South Conference) alumni traveled to Europe for the first time in October to undergo a series of trials with German football clubs during his Pro IFX 30 day program.

Pro IFX newcomer Zack Mahon began his German trials with a stop at Landesliga club 1.SC Feucht (VI) for an assessment by current manager, Klaus Mösle – formerly of 1. FC Nürnberg. After a successful training stint Klaus recommended the American next stop be Bayernliga clubs (V).

Next on slate for the American was a stop at FSV Erlangen-Bruck, former club of IFX Alumni Nate Weiss. FSV Erlangen-Bruck manager, Normann Wagner, expressed his interest and imminent intent to have the American come on board to help the club fight to stay in the Bayernliga. The club looks to avoids relegation and presently reside above the relegation zone. The following week would see Mahon travel north to Don Bosco Bamberg, another Bayernliga foe. Mahon showed well during his time at the Bamberg club and the staff welcomed his return in the future.

Mahon then traveled to league rivals ASV Neumarkt and SV Memmelsdorf. After a week on trial with SV Memmelsdorf, the Bamberg club expressed particular interest in our IFX newcomer, as they were in the market for a new striker, due to the imminent departure of their striker come the January transfer window. Shortly thereafter, a formal contract offer followed. ASV Neumarkt also fighting relegation zone and in need of a goal scorer, put a formal offer on the table after a week of trials.

After a several weeks of training and acclimation to the German style of play, our newcomer would experience a trial stint with Regionalliga Bayern (IV) club VFL Frohnlach. A recent addition to the new Regionalliga Bayern, Frohnlach competes against top Bundesliga professional reserve sides including Bayern München, TSV 1860 München, 1.FC Nürnberg, SpVgg Greuther Fürth, FC Ingolstadt, and FC Augsburg. VfL Frohnlach staff were particularly impressed with the possibilities the American had to offer.

As the first half of the German season came to a close and the winter break ensued, Frohnlach verbally expressed their intent to have Mahon join their club for the second half of the 2012-13 season. Trainer Andi Schöll took a special liking to the Texas native, commenting on his dynamic and effective style of play. He provides a burst of speed and makes intelligent runs in behind the defense. Mahon has excellent crossing ability, extreme focus and a great attitude.

Mahon returned home for the holidays and returned back to Germany for Frohnlach’s January mid-season training. With offers still on the table from various Bayernlliga clubs, Frohnlach and IFX arranged for Mahon’s guest player pass to play in a series of friendly matches against Bayernliga leaders FC Schweinfurt whom Frohnlach beat 1-0, with Mahon playing a full 90 minutes and coming close to his first goal with a hard shot off of the crossbar. The following day Frohnlach took on Bamberg rival SC Memmelsdorf, beating them 2-1. After strong performances from Mahon, Frohnlach pulled the trigger on Monday, January 28, just 4 days before the transfer window close, and formally offered a contract to the young winger to join the Frohnlach troop. Club sponsor Klaus Schillig and Board Director Christina Schön buttoned up the new signing of Mahon Tuesday night at Frohnlach’s clubhouse.
